    Intro to Jewelry with Beads

    September 14 - November 2, 2020: 11:00am- 12:00pm

    Monday Mornings

    (8 week session)

    Description

Beading is a great meditation technique as well as a gateway to creating colorful original jewelry.  This class will cover materials, tools, techniques and design consideration in a series of project-based classes.  Learn how to string a necklace, make a pair of earrings, a bracelet and bezel a cabochon while mastering basic off loom bead weaving stitches.  Then dip into Bead Embroidery, Kumihimo and Bead Crochet.  No prior experience necessary.

    Prerequesite: none

    Instructor

Joyce Ryan has a BFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in Graphic Design from Washington University.  Her work has been featured in Showcase 500 Beaded Jewelry: Photographs of Beautiful Contemporary Beadwork.  Her bead work was inspired by the colors on the feathers of parrots she worked with at a rescue.  As they bathed, water droplets would bead up on their feathers and sparkle in the sun like thousands of tiny colored lights.  The closest she could get to replicating those colors and textures were with BEADS!

    More info about Ryan Gardner

Participation in the arts was always important to me growing up.  A strong arts program in high school influenced my decision to pursue a degree int he arts.  I chose the arts program at Bowling Green State University in northwest Ohio where I discovered and fell in love with metals.  I was introduced to many artists, including Michael Boyd, who became an inspiration for me.

Since being in Colorado I have started my own business, Ryan Gardner Designs.  I now showcase my work in galleries across the country.  I love working with combing stone and metal in new ways creating works of art for people to enjoy in their daily lives.

    3 Day Virtual Workshop

     Microfolding and Corrugation

    with Cynthia Eid

    Saturday - Monday

    October 10 - October 12, 2020; 10:00 am - 4:30 pm daily

    Description

    • Microfolding can also be called corrugation. The wavy undulations add strength to thin metal, making it possible to create large, yet light and sturdy, jewelry. This process offers endless possibilities for creativity through texturing and forming. A wide variety of techniques and textural possibilities will be demonstrated, including fanfolds and ribbon forms, smocking, confirming and pleating, fold forming, and making microfolded beads. Each demonstration is followed by work time.  Process, technique, and design are emphasized in this class, rather than being project-oriented. This course is for participants with the basic skills of Jewelry 1 as well as advanced students and professionals.

      • Class will meet from 10am-4:30pm for three days.
      • Each student will sign into Zoom with their computer for watching demonstrations.
      • Each student will also mount their phone onto a holder (tripod or neck-holder) so that the teacher can see what the student is doing, and offer help as needed.
      • 10am-12:30pm will be demonstration followed by work time together, so that questions can be answered as they come up, just as we do when meeting in-person.
      • 12:30pm – 2pm will be lunch and work time on-your-own.
      • 2pm – 4:30pm will be another demonstration, followed by work time together.
      • Each day, at 4:15, we will use the phones to see what each person has made, so that we can learn from each other.

Please Note: Student tools and supplies are not provided by MAGG, make sure to check the student tools and supplies list linked below. Note, if you do not have a microfold break and do not want to invest in one, Cynthia has a limited number she is willing to rent for the fee of shipment back and forth. MAGG will offer open studio time for up to 6 local students upon request, please email the artist assistant if you are interested for details.

    2 Day Virtual Workshop

     Finding Your Balance

    with Loretta Lam

    Saturday - Sunday

    November 7 - 8, 2020; 10:00 am - 5:00 pm daily

    • Course Description

We all recognize when a design doesn’t work. We can sense the imbalance. Visual equilibrium is necessary to establishing harmony in art jewelry. But how do we choose which type of balance to use?

Loretta will teach you how to use the four types of balance: symmetry, modified symmetry, asymmetry and radial balance. All design elements have visual weight, direction, and energy. Learning to identify and use these elements deliberately, will lead to greater control over your design. Strong design produces work that is fresh, contemporary, and dynamic. You will be delighted to see how easily and confidently you can accomplish this with a few key choices.

      In this class you will:

      • Discover the effects of four basic types of balance
      • Learn how to use size, texture, direction, shape and form to support your design choice
      • Acquire the tools to help you resolve design obstacles
      • Design and create a beautifully balanced piece of jewelry
