    Fast Cast (lost-wax)

A Weekend Workshop with Barbara Mann

    March 14 & 15, 2020

    Saturday & Sunday, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Barbara Mann has had over 40 years of experience as a metal and jewelry artist.  She graduated from the University of Georgia with BFA and MFA degrees.  She has taught for many years as an adjunct instructor at the Lamar Dodd School of Art, with the UGA Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy and in Costa Rica through the UGA Continuing Education Program.  Barbara has won numerous awards for her work and conducted many workshops throughout the Southeast and for MAGG.

Barbara, a generous instructor with an engaging personality, will talk about various mold-making materials and casting waxes and show examples.  She has done thousands of castings, is fascinated by the possibilities, and looks forward to sharing her research with us and seeing our creations!

    DAY #1

    • Make an impression of something fairly small, perhaps delicate, (it won't be damaged), with a mold material that hardens (cures) in three minutes.
    • Pour wax into the mold and then add or subtract or manipulate the wax image, add sprues for casting.
    • Invest, burn-out in the kiln overnight. (You don't have to be there!)

    DAY #2

    • Pour molten silver into the mold.
    • Finish your casting by removing the sprues, filing, grinding, polishing or tumbling.

VOILA!  Walk out with some unique and beautiful castings!

Bring something small that you would like to take an impression to make a one-sided mold.  (see examples in workshop image).  The mold material we will use, Mega-sil, is used in making molds of ear canals for making hearing aids.  The mold material has baby oil in it which will not harm most things, but will leave a residue which can be wiped off.  It will stain fabric and paper.

Mega-sil mold material will be available for students to purchase at $2.00 per package which will make 1-3 molds depending on the size of the mold.

Barbara will demo several other mold materials which are available from the Engineer Guys store in Atlanta or from jewelry supply companies.

Students will pour molten wax into their molds, sprue the models, invest, then cast.  Barbara will have (1) Victory brown sculpture wax mixed with some fragrant beeswax and (2) another hard wax.

The MAGG studio, or Barbara, will have the tools and equipment you need for the workshop, but you may prefer to bring your own of the following:

    Optivisor

    Wax working tools

    Alcohol lamp

    Wax pen, like MaxWax

Finishing tools for the cast pieces: saw frame, saw blades, needle files, small grinding and polishing wheels for the flex shaft.  Barbara likes aluminum oxide points, heatless grinding wheels, and blue high-flex polishers (#332-401/10, Rio Grande), radial bristle discs, polishing pins.

Barbara will bring some grinding, polishing, flex shaft wheels, etc. for those who would liike to buy them from her.

Silver:  bring 1-2 troy ounces of clean silver scrap or casting grain.  If you would like Barbara to bring silver for you, please email her at bimann2@hotmail.com to let her know and she will bring some at about $15 per ounce, plus tax.

Participation in the arts was always important to me growing up.  A strong arts program in high school influenced my decision to pursue a degree int he arts.  I chose the arts program at Bowling Green State University in northwest Ohio where I discovered and fell in love with metals.  I was introduced to many artists, including Michael Boyd, who became an inspiration for me.

Since being in Colorado I have started my own business, Ryan Gardner Designs.  I now showcase my work in galleries across the country.  I love working with combing stone and metal in new ways creating works of art for people to enjoy in their daily lives.

    Wednesday - Friday, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm daily

Create Something Useful!  Each student will design and fabricate a spoon using one of their own spoons as a model.  Martha will demonstrate using thermoplastic pellets to make a die to be used in the hydraulic press to form the bowl of the spoon.  Handles will be fabricated from various forms and shapes of silver depending on each student's choice.  Martha will demonstrate different ways to apply the handle depending on the material chosen.

Materials required:  Each student will bring enough 18 gauge silver sheet to make 2 or 3 spoon bowls using a favorite spoon of their own as a model.  Handles can be constructed of various forms of silver and found objects for embellishments.

Dallas Vinson will have several kinds of heavy gauge wire available for students to choose from as well as the thermoplastic and 18g. silver sheet.

Basic soldering, sawing and fabricating skills required.

    ABOUT THE ARTIST

Martha Fitzmier is a metalsmith, artist and educator.  Following careers in literacy education, educational cocnsulting, and selling antiques, she took one course in metalsmithing and was captivated by the concept of creating beautiful things from metal.

Martha's interest in metals began with creating art jewelry, and her focus quickly expanded to include flatware and hollowware.  Recently Martha has been exploring deep draw hydraulic press forming and experimenting with its unique possibilities for both hollowware and jewlery design.

Martha has served on the Board of Directors of the Metal Arts Guild of Georgia (MAGG).  In the summer of 2018, Martha and her husband moved to Verona, WI.  By the fall of 2018, she completed the construction of a fully equipped teaching studio -- a welcoming setting for students to collaborate, learn new techniques, and hone their skills.

Martha is currently a board member of the Madison Art Guild and is offering workshops for students in the Madison area.  See her website marthafitzmier.com for more details.

    Cut and Fold Enamel Vessels

    instructed by

    Nash Quinn

    June 26 - June 28, 2020

    Friday - Sunday, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm daily

The class is beginner friendly- no experience necessary.

In this workshop, students will learn the basics of metal manipulation, design, and color theory by creating colorful, enameled metal vessels.  It's about design-volume, profile, negative space, symmetry, repetition and color.  Using precise measuring and layout techniques, paper models, and a jeweler's saw, participants will transform flat sheet metal into a variety of volumetric metal forms.  These forms will then be coated in vitreous enamel and kiln-fired, resulting in a chromatic array of fun, experimental vessels.

Nash Quinn is a metalsmith who works with a variety of materials, techniques, and formats.  Born in Wyoming in 1984, he received his BFA from the University of Wyoming in 2012, and his MFA from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania in 2015.  He currently lives in Philadelphia, PA with his partner, fellow metalsmith Jera Lodge.  Nash is a faculty member of Rowan University, and teaches, lectures, and exhibits his work nationwide.
